Certificate Of Rehabilitation

Following a criminal conviction, once you meet the time eligibility requirements, you can apply for a Certificate of Rehabilitation (Penal Code Sections 4852.01 et seq.). If granted, this means that a court has found that you have been rehabilitated. Once a Certificate of Rehabilitation is granted it becomes an automatic Governor’s Pardon Application. There are other benefits of obtaining a Certificate of Rehabilitation such as, in some cases, certain sex offenders are relieved of having to register as sex offenders. It prevents prior felony convictions from being used to impeach your credibility as a witness, if you have also received the Governor’s Pardon. It also prevents state licensing agencies from automatically denying your application because of your conviction.
